Due to the evolution of mobile technology and the advent of smartphones, it is astounding to see the developments in touch screen technologies in terms of brightness, picture clarity and durability. With touchscreen phones and tablets making a foray into the market, the most important part of these devices have undoubtedly become the displays or the screens. People have now started paying more attention and importance to titbits like resolution and colour saturation.
Although there are two mainstream technologies – LCD and AMOLED, there are multiple display variants to the existing LCD technology like IPS-LCD, TFT-LCD and to the AMOLED technology like Super AMOLED, Super AMOLED Plus, HD Super AMOLED and ClearBlack AMOLED, but the basic technology remains the same. While LCD has been around for quite some time, AMOLED is gaining popularity; thanks to the Samsung manufacturers.
•AMOLED – Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode or AMOLED is a popular display technology that is found on all Samsung Galaxy S series, Nokia Lumia 900, and HTC One S. AMOLED technology is a fairly old technology, but their emergence in the market on high end screens is recent. This technology is characterized by a thin layer of organic polymers that light up when zapped with an electric current. Because of this, AMOLED screens are thin, sleek and really don’t need a backlight, because the screens can produce deep blacks which can shut the screen pixels off. This technology offers prolonged battery life and consumes less power. PenTile display is a feature of AMOLED technology in which bright screens can be created using only one-third the amount of sub pixels. The negative part about PenTile display is that due to the more visible sub-pixels, images can appear to be grainy.
•Super AMOLED – A variant of AMOLED technology, Super AMOLED screens are 20% brighter, 80% less reflective and uses 20% less energy than regular AMOLED screens. Super AMOLED technology integrates a capacitive touchscreen layer directly into the display instead of overlaying it on top of the display; hence the screens can be extremely thin and sleek and come with an increased battery life.
•Super AMOLED Plus – Here the PenTile matrix is replaced by RGB matrix for improved colour reproduction and viewing angles, but they are not as bright as Super AMOLED technology.
•HD Super AMOLED – In HD Super AMOLED, there is no PenTile matrix, but it utilizes a digitizer contributing to higher display resolution with good pixel density.
•ClearBlack AMOLED – Here the panel uses ClearBlack coated with anti-glare polarizer that blocks incoming light reflections and performs better under sunlight. With deep blacks, superior colour contrast and reproduction, this screen display offers increased outdoor visibility.
•LCD – Liquid Crystal Display or LCD has been around for years. Noticeable on most recent mobile phones like iPhone, iPad and HTC One X, LCD displays first came into the picture with the introduction of the first LCD watch and calculator and now can be found on most computer monitors and televisions. LCD comprises wondrous liquid crystals, couple of glass panes and a light source. Since it deploys backlighting, the black colour in such screen displays does not look black and looks greyish black instead. Although LCD screens can produce some of the most realistic colors, it does not offer a wide contrast ratio in terms of brightness and darkness as seen in AMOLED screen displays.
•TFT-LCD – A variant of the LCD screen panel, in TFT or Thin Film Transistor screen display comprises a layer on the LCD consisting of transistors and rows and columns for improved pixel resolution. TFT-LCD screen display offers limited visibility in bright light, side-angle viewing and contrast and colour reproduction and are typically seen in low-budget, feature phones and budget smartphones for their ease of production
•IPS-LCD – IPS-LCD or in-plane switching LCD technology is an enhancement of the LCD technology and overcomes most of the problems associated with LCD like improved viewing angles, power consumption and allows smaller pixels for better and improved resolution. Used in Nexus 4, iPhone and HTC One, IPS-LCD is seen in high-quality smartphones and contributes to long battery life, consumes less power and has better viewing angles than TFT-LCD.
Even though there are pros and cons in each display screen technology, in the end, the screen viewing angle, contrast ratio and colour reproduction and what fit your needs is what you should take into consideration and look for!
